Tom Kaulitz was born ten minutes before his twin brother Bill Kaulitz on 1 September 1989. Born in Loitshe, Leipzig, Germany, the boys had a less than exciting childhood as they didn't exactly fit in with the other kids. Tom hated most subjects at school, especially maths and science, however one subject that he did enjoy was art. Nevertheless, Tom found his passion in music and playing his guitar and soon he and his brother formed the band Tokio Hotel, formerly known as Devilish. With Bill singing lead vocals, Tom playing guitar and two other members, Gustav (drums) and Georg (bass guitar), Tokio Hotel became an international success, winning many awards worldwide. The Kaulitz twins' parents, Simone and Jörg Kaulitz divorced when the boys were seven and then Simone got remarried to Gordon Trümper. At a very young age Tom and Bill acted together in the German TV-film Verrückt nach dir, released in 1994. But around the same time, the boys found their talent in music, when Bill started songwriting and Tom started playing the guitar. The twins decided to create their own individual look at a very young age and unlike his brother's rocker style, Tom went for the gansta/rapper look. His look often consists of very baggy jeans, baggy shirts and jerseys, New Eras Hats, baseball caps, headbands, and dreadlocks.

Tom's hobbies are music, parties, BMX and spraying graffiti. Tom loves German Hip Hop, especially Samy Deluxe. The first cd he bought was Aerosmith and the first concert he went to watch was Samy Deluxe. Tom has a Dobermann-Labrador Scotty dog, a cat and there is a rumor about a second dog. Unlike Bill, Tom doesn't have any tattoos, but has one piercing on his bottom lip. As for his hair, Tom just uses wax to keep his dreadlocks in tip top shape. Tom's favourite drink is Red Bull and Cola. His favourite city is Tokyo and his favourite cars are Hummers and the BMW Cabrio. As for technology, Tom's mobile phone is a Sony Ericsson T630
